The Sage Gateshead Adult Chamber Choir at St Gabriel's

Saturday 27 March 2010
Easter Concert at St Gabriel's Church, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne
Our Easter term concert took
place at the spacious and friendly St Gabriel's on a fine Saturday evening. A large and
very appreciative audience was
enthralled by the varied repertoire which we
performed, led by our Choir Director Ed Milner.
Amongst the items performed were Chamber Choir favourites
such as Lux Aurumque (Whitacre), Cherubic Hymn No
7 (Bortniansky), Gustav Holst's memorable Nunc Dimittis for 8 parts, and
the irresistably stirring Daemon Irrepit Callidus by the living Hungarian composer Gyorgy
Orban. We were joined by The Silver Breves from The Sage Gateshead, under their Choir
Director Ed Aldcroft, to sing 4
items, including Stanford's Beati Quorum Via, and another of Eric Whitacre's masterpieces of harmonic
structure, Sleep. The Silver Breves also performed some of their own repertoire to create a real song-fest for the audience.
The Revd. Dr Sue Wilson, St
Gabriel's Vicar, thanked us all for singing 'in a church built for singing' and the audience for coming, and was generally most appreciative of the entire event - as we were of the St
Gabriel's back-office team with the endless stream of teas and coffees and the amount of room in which we could relax before the concert. We look forward to visiting St Gabriel's
again in the future.
A big thank you to all who performed and all who supported us and have supported us in the past.
The Sage Gateshead Adult
Chamber Choir will be
performing twice this summer the first will be a brilliant rendition of Britten's 'Rejoice in
the Lamb' which will be performed at Brancepeth on
Wednesday the 30th of June,
and the second will be a lovely selection of summery songs and madrigals at St Cuthberts
Shotley Bridge on Sunday the
11th July.
We will keep you posted with
any changes or additional events.

Barcelona photos

Choir at St Pau del CampFabulous time, I hope, had by all. The people who were new to Team Sage on tour seemed to realise what they had missed out on previously. Were slightly hamstrung by half the sopranos and a director falling foul of Easyjet's check-in time versus Barcelona's mass times, but the pretend sops and the relief director did a fine job. Yet again, wonderfully friendly priests offering us some superb acoustics. Photos by Kate, Rob and Sue, Ed

Sue managed to capture - almost professionally Locus Iste in Tibidabo, which I thought was ridiculously good, only that's because it was the performance in the lower basilica rather than the flash mob version in the stairwell :)

Hoping to eat at Can Magarit afterwards (so practise some Tuna songs!)

Sun 23rd we're invited to sing mass and afterwards at St Augusti, just off La Rambla.
Very pretty church, just a little worried about a long mass as people flying back on Sunday will need to sprint afterwards - the rest of us will then retire to the beach :)

Cracow venues

Concerts confirmed for August Bank Holiday in Cracow are as follows:

Franciscan ChruchFriday evening: the Franciscan Church. Founded in the 13th C and Cracow's first brick-built church, the interior is amazingly decorated, and contains some fabulous stained glass by Stanislaw Wyspianski.

Saturday day: Wieliczka Salt Mines

Sunday morning: St Florian's Church followed by St Mark's Church. St Florian is now a rich baroque church rebuilt from the 12th C original, not too unlike the interior of Prague's St Ignatius. Then we shall scoot back to centreville to sing after the mass at the evangelical church.
